The Route: Cairns to Port Douglas via Captain Cook Highway

The drive from Cairns to Port Douglas follows the Captain Cook Highway north for exactly 67 kilometres. The road is sealed, well-maintained, and suitable for all standard vehicles year-round. For the first 20km the highway passes through Cairns’ northern suburbs, before opening up along the stunning coastal section.

The most dramatic stretch runs from Ellis Beach to Port Douglas, where the highway hugs cliffsides above the Coral Sea. This section of road is among the most photographed coastal drives in Australia and is reason enough to hire a car rather than taking the shuttle bus.

Drive on the left. Australia uses left-hand traffic. International visitors must familiarise themselves with local road rules. Speed limits are typically 100km/h on open highway and 50km/h through towns and villages.
