Why Stop on the Way?

If you are self-driving from Cairns to Port Douglas, the journey is far more than a transfer — it is one of the most rewarding coastal drives in the country. The highway hugs cliffsides above the Coral Sea, passes through tropical beachside villages, and offers sweeping viewpoints that stop you in your tracks.

Allow at least 2–3 hours if you want to make the most of what’s along the way. See our full distance and time guide for an exact breakdown of how each stop adds to your journey time.

1. Palm Cove — 25km from Cairns

Palm Cove is the jewel of Cairns’ northern beaches and the most refined stop on the route. The esplanade is lined with century-old melaleuca (paperbark) trees and is home to some of the best restaurants and cafes north of Cairns city. The beach itself is calm, clean, and far less crowded than Cairns Esplanade.

Best for: Coffee, breakfast, a relaxed stroll, or a swim in the dry season. Allow: 30–60 minutes.

2. Trinity Beach — 15km from Cairns

A quieter alternative to Palm Cove for those who prefer to avoid tourist crowds. Trinity Beach has a lovely long stretch of sand, a few local cafes, and a relaxed residential feel. Good for a quick leg-stretch if you are not planning a longer stop at Palm Cove.

Best for: Quiet beach walk, local atmosphere. Allow: 20–30 minutes.

3. Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures — ~40km

Arguably Queensland’s finest wildlife park, Hartley’s sits right on the Captain Cook Highway and is impossible to miss. Saltwater crocodile feeding shows, cassowary encounters, koala hold sessions, and rainforest boat tours. This is a genuine half-day stop.

Best for: Families with children, wildlife enthusiasts. Allow: 2–3 hours minimum.

4. Ellis Beach — ~40km

The last patrolled beach north of Cairns before Port Douglas. Ellis Beach has a laid-back beachside bar and kitchen serving excellent fish and chips. The beach is backed by rainforest and is largely undeveloped — a genuine tropical beach experience. In the dry season, it is excellent for swimming.

Best for: Swimming, casual lunch, tropical beach experience. Allow: 30–45 minutes.

5. Rex Lookout — ~50km (Do Not Miss This)

Rex Lookout is the single best viewpoint on the entire Cairns to Port Douglas route and one of the most impressive coastal panoramas in Queensland. The highway passes a roadside pullout with sweeping views south along the Coral Sea, framed by the Great Dividing Range. This is a five-minute stop that produces photographs people put on their walls.

Best for: Photography, appreciation of the route’s grandeur. Allow: 10–20 minutes. Pull off completely and walk to the edge of the lookout.

6. Wangetti Beach — ~55km

A remote, undeveloped beach accessible via a short turnoff from the highway. Almost never crowded. The road to the beach is unsealed but suitable for a standard 2WD vehicle. Excellent for a peaceful final stop before arriving in Port Douglas.

Best for: Solitude, undeveloped tropical beach. Allow: 20–30 minutes.

The must-see stops are: Rex Lookout (panoramic coastal views), Palm Cove (village coffee and beach), Ellis Beach (swimming and lunch), and Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures (families). In that order of priority if time is limited.
Standard shuttle buses do not offer flexible stops — they follow set timetables with designated hotel pickups. To stop at viewpoints and beaches, you need to self-drive or book a day tour that includes these stops.
