The World’s Oldest Rainforest

The Daintree Rainforest is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the oldest continuously surviving tropical rainforest on Earth — approximately 180 million years old, predating the Amazon by 100 million years. It is home to an extraordinary concentration of wildlife including cassowaries, tree kangaroos, Bennett’s wallabies, and more than 430 bird species.

Port Douglas is the ideal base for exploring the Daintree. The Daintree River crossing is just 45 minutes north, making day trips extremely manageable. Getting to Port Douglas from Cairns is straightforward — see our transport guide for all options.

How to Get There from Port Douglas

Self-Drive

Drive north from Port Douglas on the Captain Cook Highway through Mossman, then follow signs to the Daintree River. A vehicle ferry (the only crossing — there is no bridge) operates from approximately 6am to midnight. Return ferry fare: approximately AUD $28 for a car and passengers. Important: most hire car insurance policies do not cover vehicles north of the Daintree River — check with your rental company before crossing.

Guided Day Tour from Port Douglas

The simplest option. Tours typically include the Daintree River cruise, guided rainforest walks, and often Cape Tribulation. Several operators pick up directly from Port Douglas accommodation. Prices from AUD $95–$175 per person. See our day tour guide for options from Cairns that pass through Port Douglas.

A 90-minute boat cruise on the tannin-dark Daintree River searching for saltwater crocodiles, kingfishers, pythons, and tropical birds. Departures from the Daintree River ferry area throughout the day. Prices from AUD $30–$45 per person. This is the single best wildlife experience in the region.

Mossman Gorge

Approximately 20 minutes north of Port Douglas, Mossman Gorge is a spectacular river gorge within Daintree National Park. Crystal-clear swimming holes surrounded by ancient rainforest. The Kuku Yalanji Dreamtime Walk with Kuku Yalanji traditional owners is one of the finest indigenous cultural experiences in Queensland. Entry to the gorge is free; cultural walk tickets are purchased at the centre.

Cape Tribulation

Cape Trib is a genuine natural wonder, and the drive north from the Daintree River crossing is one of the most dramatic in Australia.
