Why Reef Trips from Port Douglas Are Better
Port Douglas is widely regarded by reef professionals as the superior departure point for the Great Barrier Reef. Here is why: the Outer Reef is approximately 50–60 minutes by boat from Port Douglas marina, compared to 90 minutes from Cairns. This means you spend more time on the reef and less time on a boat. Boats from Port Douglas also tend to be smaller (50–120 passengers versus 300+ from Cairns), meaning a more personal experience and less crowded reef platforms.
Getting to Port Douglas from Cairns is straightforward — see our full transport guide for shuttle, private transfer and self-drive options.
Types of Reef Experience
Snorkelling Day Trips
The most popular option by far. Day boats depart from Port Douglas Marina on Wharf Street at 8–9am and return by 5pm. Most visits two to three reef sites, giving four to five hours of total snorkel time. All equipment is included. Expect to pay AUD $150–$220 per person including a buffet lunch on board.
Scuba Diving
Most day boats offer both introductory dives (no certification required) and certified dives. An introductory dive adds approximately AUD $50–$80 to the base day trip price. Full PADI open water certification courses are available over 3–4 days from Port Douglas operators.
Small-Group Luxury Tours
Several operators run small-group tours capped at 10–15 guests to premium, less-visited sections of the reef. These tours cost AUD $300–$500+ but offer exceptional individual attention, expert guidance, and access to reef sites the large boats cannot reach.
Liveaboard Trips
For serious divers, multi-day liveaboard expeditions operate from Cairns and Port Douglas to remote sections of the outer reef and Coral Sea. These are a significant investment (AUD $800–$2,000+) but offer unparalleled underwater access.

Essential Reef Tips
- Book at least 48–72 hours in advance in peak season (June–September) — popular boats sell out completely
- Use reef-safe sunscreen only — chemical sunscreens are banned on most reef boats and damage coral
- Wear a lycra stinger suit during wet season (November–May) — see seasonal guide
- Take motion sickness medication if you are susceptible — the open ocean can be rough
- Underwater cameras can be hired on most vessels if you do not have your own
- Most day trips depart at 8–9am — if coming from Cairns, allow travel time and book an early shuttle or private transfer
