When is the Best Time to Visit Port Douglas?

Port Douglas has two clearly defined seasons: a dry season from May to October and a wet season from November to April. The dry season is when the destination is at its absolute best, with reliable sunshine, calm seas ideal for reef trips, and very low humidity. The wet season brings lower prices but also heavy afternoon rain and the presence of marine stingers in coastal waters.

May to October - The Best Time to Visit

The dry season delivers consistently excellent conditions across the board. Temperatures sit at a comfortable 24 to 28 degrees Celsius with very low humidity. Rainfall is minimal and the Coral Sea is calm, making reef day trips from Port Douglas Marina the best experience of the year.

June to August is the peak of the dry season and the most popular time. Perfect weather but higher accommodation prices and more visitors. Book reef trips and resorts well in advance.

May and October are the ideal shoulder months. Conditions are very close to peak season quality with noticeably fewer visitors and lower prices. If you can travel in these months, they represent the best overall value.

November to April

Wet Season - Lower Prices, Some Trade-offs

The wet season brings lush green landscapes, significantly reduced accommodation prices (often 20 to 40 percent lower) and fewer crowds. However it also brings heavy afternoon thunderstorms, high humidity and the critical issue of marine stingers.

Box jellyfish and Irukandji are present in Far North Queensland coastal waters from approximately November to May. Swimming at Four Mile Beach requires the stinger net enclosure. Reef snorkelling requires a full lycra stinger suit. Reef visibility can also be reduced by rainfall runoff from the land.

The Daintree Rainforest is particularly spectacular during the wet season, with waterfalls at full volume and the forest at its most dramatic. Some roads north of Port Douglas may close during severe flooding events.
