Great Barrier Reef Day Trips from Port Douglas
Port Douglas has a strong claim to being the best departure point for the Great Barrier Reef in all of Australia. The Outer Reef is just 50 to 60 minutes by boat from Port Douglas Marina, compared to 90 minutes from Cairns. This means more time on the reef and less time on a vessel. Port Douglas reef boats are also smaller, meaning less crowded platforms and a more personal experience.
Better Reef Access Than Cairns
Three factors make Port Douglas the preferred choice for serious reef visitors. Proximity: the shorter boat ride means more snorkelling and diving time. Boat size: Port Douglas boats carry 50 to 120 passengers compared to 300+ on some Cairns operators. Reef condition: the sections of Outer Reef accessible from Port Douglas have generally maintained higher coral cover.
Most day boats visit two to three reef sites, giving four to five hours of snorkelling time. A buffet lunch is served on board and all snorkelling equipment is included in the price. Introductory scuba dives are available for beginners at an additional charge of approximately AUD $50 to $80.
What to Know Before Your Reef Trip
Book at least 48 to 72 hours in advance during peak season from June to September. Popular boats sell out completely during school holidays. Use reef-safe sunscreen only - chemical sunscreens damage coral and are banned on most reef boats.
Wear a lycra stinger suit from November to May. If prone to seasickness, take medication before boarding as the open ocean can be rough. Most day boats depart Port Douglas Marina at 8am to 9am, so plan your transfer from Cairns accordingly. See our shuttle bus guide for early morning services from Cairns.
