Best Attractions in Port Douglas
Port Douglas is a compact, walkable town where almost everything worth seeing is within easy strolling distance. From the famous four-mile stretch of sand to the wildlife sanctuary, colourful Sunday market and excellent restaurants, here is your complete guide to what the town has to offer.
Four Mile Beach - Port Douglas at Its Finest
Four Mile Beach is the defining attraction of Port Douglas and one of the finest stretches of sand in Far North Queensland. Wide, palm-fringed and largely uncrowded even in peak season, it stretches four miles north from the headland with the Coral Sea on one side and tropical vegetation on the other.
In dry season from May to October, swimming inside the patrolled stinger net enclosure is excellent. Lifeguards patrol daily during peak hours. Sunrise walks on Four Mile Beach are a ritual for regular Port Douglas visitors - the light is extraordinary and you will often have long stretches entirely to yourself.
Getting there: 10 to 15-minute walk east from Macrossan Street or a short taxi ride from anywhere in town.
Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas
Wildlife Habitat is one of the best wildlife sanctuaries in Queensland and the standout family activity in Port Douglas. Home to cassowaries, saltwater crocodiles, koalas, tree kangaroos and hundreds of tropical bird species in large free-flight aviaries.
The Breakfast with the Birds experience is a highlight - breakfast served inside a massive aviary surrounded by free-flying lorikeets, pelicans and other tropical species. It runs daily from 8am to 11am and bookings are essential.
Allow 2 to 3 hours minimum for a full visit. Located on Port Douglas Road, a 10-minute walk or short taxi from Macrossan Street.
Sunday Markets and Macrossan Street
The Port Douglas Sunday Market runs every Sunday morning from 8am to 1pm at Anzac Park on the waterfront. Local produce, tropical fruits, crafts, jewellery and street food in a relaxed tropical setting. Free entry and parking available nearby.
Macrossan Street is the heart of Port Douglas. A four-block strip lined with excellent restaurants, boutique shops, tour operators and cafes. Dining options range from casual beachside spots to upmarket modern Australian cuisine. Restaurants book out during peak season so reservations are recommended for dinner.
